What do you get when you combine oysters, a sunset and a bunch of Rocketts Landing residents on a terrace? One heck of a fall social committee event with a fantastic view!
On Nov. 19, around 40 Rocketts Landing residents gathered on the Sky Line terrace to enjoy raw and fried oysters sponsored by The Boathouse, and homemade Brunswick Stew, while taking in the sunset over the James River and downtown skyline. And from what we've heard, the group thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
"The sunset was amazing, and everyone mingled while enjoying their favorite beverage," says Cedar Works resident Hayley Karicof. "The food was also amazing! They did a great job with the Brunswick stew, and The Boathouse offered scrumptious fried and raw oysters. [Afterward], a few of us ventured over to Conch Republic to listen to the band and continue the party."
Completely organized by Rocketts Landing residents, their annual oyster roast focuses on celebrating the fall season together, while also raising funds to help buy Thanksgiving meals for families in need living in neighboring Fulton Hill. The families were identified by local nonprofit the Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) — an organization Rocketts Landing helps support that provides Fulton Hill residents an array of resources to support personal and community growth.
“For the Thanksgiving Food Drive, we raised $555,” says Social Committee President Sharon Payne. “We were charged with raising enough money for five NRC families [in need this holiday season]. We surpassed last year’s fundraising total by about $200, while supporting two additional families.”
As far as social events go, more fun times are in store. They will be holding an NRC holiday toy drive, a holiday/boat party on Dec. 10, a New Year’s Eve party and Super Bowl party. So, if you’re a Rocketts Landing resident, be sure to keep these events on your calendar. The camaraderie and good times are too fun to pass up!
