The weather's supposed to be perfect this weekend, which is fantastic news for the Rocketts Landing Run to the River! As Richmond's most challenging urban cross-country race, Run to the River combines athleticism with fundraising to help support local nonprofit the Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC). We are super excited to again serve as race sponsors, so we thought we'd share some insider's tips on how you can make this race the most successful yet!
Mentally prepare for the hills
Yep, Richmond's notorious city hills are the source of both intrigue and anxiety for Run to the River participants. If you're racing this year, not only will you tackle a few hills, you'll also run up 190-feet inclines -- twice! While everyone has their own tricks of the trade for getting through a run (which usually includes training for those hills ahead of time) -- a great tip we use is making sure to look directly ahead of you, rather than up to the hill’s top. By not focusing on the hill’s incline, it’s amazing what mind tricks you can play on yourself!
Participate as a Fundrunner/walker
Whether you’re running the 10k or walking the 5k, it’s not too late to sign up as a Fundrunner/walker to help raise funds for the NRC with every stride you take. Thus far, 69 runners and walkers are fundraising, and they’ve raised $4,138 to help support NRC programming. Upping your race-ante to fundraiser will not only help the NRC get that much closer to their $6,000 fundraising goal — it’ll be fantastic fuel to keep you racing up those challenging hills (just think of the smiling faces on all the children you’re supporting!).
Volunteer to help on race day
If running or walking isn’t your style — or, if you’d just rather lend a helping hand, instead — volunteering is an awesome way to get involved while helping the race’s success. NRC Race Director Blue Clements says that they could still use some help at water stations and a couple marshals on the course. And registering to help is as easy as visiting the Run to the River volunteer page today.
And, don’t forget the great after party they’ve planned, which includes free massages from the University of Richmond Massage Therapy Program. Plus, there’ll be delicious NRC-cooked food, an awards ceremony and more. We look forward to seeing you this Saturday at the Rocketts Landing Run to the River!
