Thanks to you, Richmond, the Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) successfully raised over $30,000 in their biggest Rocketts Landing Run to the River yet! As both a fundraiser for the Fulton Hill-based nonprofit and urban cross-country 10k run/5k walk, Run to the River brings everyone together for a day of competitive racing and community camaraderie in Richmond's East End -- and we couldn't be more pleased with the event's success!
Increased Funds to Help NRC Programs
Race participants could either choose to race traditionally or as a "Fundrunner," where they raise money by racing. This year, over $10,000 of the money raised came from race registrations and Fundrunners, which marks the highest amount of money raised through race participants, to date! NRC will put the money to great use supporting programs such as their after-school supper, GED tutoring, Montessori preschool and beyond.
More Racers, More Competition
From a race standpoint, every new participant helps make a more competitive and exciting event. And this year, the Rocketts Landing Run to the River had 210 racers: 137 runners (10k) and 73 walkers (5k). More runners also resulted in some of our fastest race times yet! Not only did our winner post a new course record at 35:54 — all three of the top male racers broke the previous course record!
New Race Director
Blue Clements, NRC food programs director and community manager, led this year’s Run to the River — and she certainly kept the focus and spirits high throughout the race.
“This was my first year as Race Director,” explained Blue, “and I was amazed by our racers and volunteers. All of them were positive, supportive and brought a sense of community and camaraderie to the event. [At one point], I looked out into our little parking lot to a sea of smiling faces, ready to run, walk and volunteer for the NRC. It felt like the whole center was getting a big hug.”
We also thank all the Rocketts Landing residents who came out to race and volunteer!
If you’ve not yet checked out the Rocketts Landing Run to the River race, we definitely encourage you to register next year. And while you’re at it, be sure to stop by the Neighborhood Resource Center to learn more about all the great things they do for the Fulton Hill community. We look forward to seeing you in 2013 at next year’s race!
