After participating last year, I have to say that this race is unlike any others in Richmond. The course alone is truly unique - winding through historic neighborhoods and cobblestone streets over steep hills (Powhatan, Potomac and Libby Hills) along the city's scenic riverfront - and, the after-race party is one of the best in town with great refreshments, live music and a unique, alternative health fair.
First, always pre-register. While it is perfectly fine to register at the event on race day, it often helps to register a few weeks, or even days beforehand. By doing so, you are not only able to get your race day goodies in advance, it also allows you to arrive at the race ready to go. You can focus on the run and less on getting your registration form filled out, your race number pinned on in enough time to stretch and get situated comfortably among the other runners at the starting line. If you get to the race early enough, you are also able to relax, get mentally prepared, catch up with fellow running friends and partake in the pre-race activities and festivities. If your plans change and you are unable to make the race, do not worry. It is for charity, and the registration money will always go to a great cause, just like the Neighborhood Resource Center. Below is a photo of Nick, one of the Neighborhood Resource Center's recipients.
Second, do not forget to fuel up, and I do not mean your car. Running on empty is not very fun, or safe. When I do not eat the proper pre-race meal, my performance and overall well-being suffer. Make sure on race day morning you get a healthy, light breakfast full of whole grain carbohydrates and protein, such as wheat toast and eggs. I have also found that a banana can help with muscle cramps during and after the race; however dairy, such as milk or cheese, can often have the opposite effect and cause a few “side stitches.” Most importantly, don’t forget water – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate before, during and after the race.
Lastly, enjoy yourself and never forget to pat yourself on the back for a job (race) well done. Running is fun, and the fact that you are supporting a local charity is even more fulfilling. While races can be intense depending on your expectations or fitness level, they do not have to be. You can always register and walk with friends while enjoying views of the James River and exploring historic neighborhoods along the race course. By simply crossing the finish line, you are already winner, and you should be proud.
I hope these tips help you get ready and motivated for October 16. You can get more information and pre-register (which I highly recommend) by visiting www.runtotheriver.org or check out the Rocketts Landing Facebook Event page.
