The air is crisp and the James River is welcoming along the Rocketts Landing riverfront -- which is perfect news for our events this weekend! We have two ways we're welcoming people to get out and enjoy the season: a rockin' fundraiser encouraging people to dance under the stars and an endurance triathlon testing Richmonders' athleticism. Both events always bring a great group of people down to our community, so we're looking forward to a wonderful RVA weekend!
Massey on the River
On Saturday, September 21, the VCU Massey Cancer Center will hold its 4th annual fundraiser, Massey on the River, along the Rocketts Landing riverfront. Presented by Apex Systems and hosted by The Massey Alliance, Massey on the River brings hundreds of people down to the banks of the James River for a festive gathering to raise money for cancer research and care. Last year, the event raised over $50,000, and this year, organizers hope to top $60,000.
From delicious food and drinks to a grooving dance party, partygoers will have lots to enjoy! Rocketts Landing restaurant M Bistro & Wine Bar is serving as the exclusive food provider, with Veritas Winery, Williamsburg Winery, James River Cellars and Anchor Brewing joining the mix for the wine and beer. Three Sheets to the Wind and Party of Four will keep everyone dancing with lively music, while an expansive silent auction will round out the event. Auction items include cool things such as “A Golfer’s Escape to Roanoke,” a weeklong stay on Kiawah Island (South Carolina), and tickets to Richmond Flying Squirrels games, among many other items.
Richmond Rox Triathlon
Another great event happening along the Rocketts Landing riverfront this weekend is the Richmond Rox Triathlon. As a fundraiser for the VCU Evens-Haynes Burn Center and hailed by race organizers Richmond Multisports as “Richmond’s Only Half-Iron Distance Triathlon,” Richmond Rox brings some of the region’s strongest athletes down to our community.
This year, participants have multiple ways to experience the race: Traditional triathletes can complete the whole event by swimming 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles and run 13.1 miles. Plus, there’s a new Olympic distance course plus an aquabike division for people who’d rather not run the half marathon. And for the first time, Richmond Rox will also feature a Relay-Match program, where they match swimmers with runners or bikers for an additional race feature.
The post-race party will feature of plethora of yumminess with food provided by RVA’s own Buz & Ned’s Real Barbecue, desserts by the Kona Ice truck and a variety of delicious beverages in the fundraising Beer Garden. Various vendors will also be onsite and live music will keep people entertained. And because you can’t have a great race without some great racer swag, participating athletes will receive finisher medals, headsweat visors, post-race meal tickets, race shorts and more!
With all this excitement happening two days in a row along the Rocketts Landing riverfront, we’re ready for the week to be over and the fun to begin. We look forward to seeing you there!
