Rocketts Landing Residents Get Social

Post Date: 08-25-2011

At Rocketts Landing, we've frequently spoken of the close-knit communities our residents enjoy. From gathering for holiday celebrations to dining together, Rocketts Landing residents are truly social people -- and we believe nothing showcases this better than their organized Social Committee.

Spearheaded by resident Sharon Payne, assistant principal of J.R. Tucker High School by day, the Social Committee is an informal group with two distinct focuses: spending time with neighbors through resident-focused events and community fundraising. Each building at Rocketts Landing has its own social committee representative who keeps residents and the committee in the loop about what's going on in the neighborhood.

For events, they place a huge emphasis on friends, food and good times -- and the more, the merrier.

“It’s very informal,” says Sharon. “We’re just trying to foster a strong community. I associate living at Rocketts Landing like [living in] a Fan neighborhood that happens to be on the river. We have everyone from 24 year olds to retirees living here. We’re truly a diverse group.”

They also host everything from oyster roasts and chili cook-offs to Halloween and Christmas parties. In fact, their Halloween party is the biggest event to date. Residents enjoy karaoke, music, door prizes — and of course, themed costumes. (A sneak peak into this year’s theme? Rockstar.)

In terms of community fundraising, they focus their efforts on a nonprofit close to Rocketts Landing’s heart: the Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) in Fulton Hill. From raising money for their special events to volunteering at fundraising drives, our residents’ Social Committee is truly dedicated to the cause. In fact, last Thanksgiving, they raised funds for six Fulton Hill families who couldn’t afford food for the holidays — doubling the amount of money raised from their original goal.

So, if you’re a Rocketts Landing resident and you’re new to the community or haven’t yet checked out the Social Committee, we highly encourage you to jump in on the fun. Their next event is a Labor Day picnic on Sept. 4, and chances are, there’s a basket with your name on it!
