The wait is over, friends! This Sunday, AF Wake hosts Richmond's first wakeboarding competition at Rocketts Landing, and we couldn't be more excited for our newest event to begin!
The USA Wakeboard competition -- dubbed "Rocketts Big Air" -- features up to 10 of the region's top pro- and semi-pro wakeboarders showing off their wave-riding skills. Organized by world champion wakeboarder Adam Fields, Rocketts Big Air is the first competition in a series of events happening throughout Virginia that will showcase the growth of wakeboarding across the region. The series finishes in the fall with the USA Wakeboard Amateur National Championships at Lake Gaston.
"The whole point is to grow the sport of wakeboarding around the region," explains Fields. "And Richmond is outdoorsy and action-sport minded. With the city as a backdrop, the marina and all the restaurants, Rocketts Landing is the perfect venue for the event."
Fields hand-selected riders for the wakeboarding competition who will each have 60 seconds to show off their best tricks for a chance to win top place and cash prizes in three categories: Best Trick, Best Air and Best Overall. USA Wakeboard–rated professionals will judge their performances. Spectators will also enjoy two wakeboarding demos by professional riders.
“I like to feature riders with great attitudes who need some spotlight and the opportunity to build their portfolios,” says Fields. “We’re featuring local talent who are all really incredible athletes.”
On land, spectators will get to browse products and displays from a variety of vendors. Rocketts Landing’s riverfront restaurants, Conch Republic Rocketts and The Boathouse, will also open their doors and patios for hungry patrons (and if you arrive early enough to get a patio table, you’ll also have some of the best views in the house!).
