At Rocketts Landing, we're used to cycling events at and near our community, such as the annual Cap2Cap Bike Ride!
In case you need a reminder (or haven’t yet heard about
Richmond 2015), the Union Cyclist Internationale (UCI) Road World Championships
is a global capstone cycling event, bringing 1,000 of the world’s premier male,
female and junior cyclists together to compete for top ranks. The nine-day
cycling event will take place from September 19 – 27, 2015, and will attract an
estimated 450,000-onsite spectators from the United States and around the world.
The course
will zoom and zag across all different RVA terrains, including right past
Rocketts Landing along Route 5, into Varina and surrounding counties. But we don’t
even have to wait until next year for a taste of the action! To prepare for
2015’s race, the USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals will test out the time
trial and road race circuit courses from May 2 – 4, 2014.
According to COO of Richmond 2015 (the organization managing the race) Tim Miller, they considered three main factors when creating the courses: competitive/technical aspects, RVA’s best terrains, and the overall impact on RVA’s community. UCI officials certified the courses during a visit to Richmond in December 2013.
More details are in the works for the race, as well as Rocketts Landing’s role in the whole event. While no race will run straight through our neighborhood, we’re excited that we’ll be able to step right outside of our front doors, saunter down the street, and see global cycling action at our community’s doorsteps.
As more 2015 UCI Road World Championships and Rocketts Landing developments occur, we’ll be sure to keep you posted! So check back for more updates soon.
