Dragon Boat Festival

The dragons returned to Rocketts Landing! Led by the rhythmic beat of a drum, teams of 20 synchronized paddlers, one drummer and one steersperson raced 500 meters up the river in 40-foot canoes rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails. The day of festivities also included traditional Chinese performances in dance and martial arts. This annual event, organized by SportsBackers, has been named to Richmond.com's "Best of Outdoors" list three years in a row and it was apparent why again this year.
Virginia Boat Club Sprints Regatta

In it's 11th year, the Sprints Regatta hosted by Virginia Boat Club was once again a success. Clubs from across the region brought Masters and Masters Novices to compete on the James and spectators flocked to the banks to cheer them on. Halligan's BBQ was on hand to provide food for the hungry athletes and their fans. The drinks were flowing and the music was pumping as well. VBC proudly took gold medals in 12 of 19 events in which they competed.
Rocketts Red Glare

Summer started with a bang - literally! - again this year at our annual Rocketts Red Glare Memorial Day event. More than 6000 Richmonders and friends took to the riverfront to eat, drink, dance, ooh, and ahh. Food trucks lined Old Main Street in front of The Boathouse and volunteers sold local brews to benefit our event benefact, Connor's Heroes. Local musicians Colin Healy and Kings of Swings brought party-goers to their feet as the the sun set and the fireworks began.
Richmond Rox Triathlon

Swim. Bike. Run. The Rocketts Landing riverfront played host to Richmond Multisports' Richmond Rox endurance triathlon once again this September. Participants had quite a few options as events included a half-iron distance triathlon, an Olympic-distance triathlon, an aquabike competition, and a relay. Over 300 athletes competed, swimming in the cool, but calm James River, riding through rural Varina, and running through the city, along the floodwall, and around Brown's and Belle Islands. The finish line celebration included live music and food by Buz & Ned's. The event also served as a fundraiser, bringing in over $1500 for the VCU Evans-Haynes Burn Center.
Massey on the River

The rain didn't keep these party-goers from dancing the night away. For the 2nd year, Rocketts Landing hosted Massey on the River. The sold out crowd of 800+ swayed to the tunes of Three Sheets to the Wind and Party of Four, enjoyed delicious Southern French delights from M Bistro and Wine Bar, sipped wine from Veritas Winery, Williamsburg Winery, & James River Cellars and beer by Anchor Brewing. The evening also featured a silent auction which, together with admission funds, brought in over $62,000 for the VCU Massey Cancer Center.
Dragon Boat Festival - August 10, 2013

A record number of thrity-one teams from around town and up and down the east coast participated in this year's Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival, organized by SportsBackers and Great White North. A brief rain storm caused paddlers and spectators to take shelter in the early afternoon but it did not dampen the competitive spirit. In addition to the races, festival visitors were treated to traditional Chinese dance, music, and martial arts demonstrations. And the celebration continued as the sun set. For the first time, the day concluded with a concert and 'The Hit List' entertained the crowd into the evening.
Rocketts Landing Triathlon - June 23, 2013

A rainy start to our Richmond summer resulted in high river levels and so Richmond Multisports made the decision to eliminate the swim portion of the Rocketts Landing Triathlon this year. Instead, athletes competed in a duathlon, consisting of a 2 mile run followed by a 40K bike and another 10K run. The event was moved from July to June this year and the change made for cooler race day temps - and just a little bit of precipitation. Between athletes, volunteers and spectators, nearly 700 showed up this year. As always, the day concluded with an awards ceremony and a party with lively music, tasty food, and lots of fun.
VBC Sprints Regatta - June 22, 2013

Rowers from across the state of Virginia and beyond took to the James River for the Virginia Boat Club's Sprints Regatta, which is quickly becoming THE premier club regatta for the mid-atlantic region. Novices and masters from 20 clubs competed in races that lasted throughout the day. Most participants were returning but the Rock Creek Rowing Club was a first timer this year. VBC volunteers were on hand to sell club merchandise and local vendors shared their wares. Despite a brief afternoon rainstorm, many spectators stuck it out, enjoying camraderie, music, food, and drinks as they cheered on their favorite clubs.
Boxer Brief Battle 5K - June 8, 2013

The Boxer Brief Battle 5K was a new addition to our Rocketts Landing events calendar for 2013. Organized by Hitting Cancer Below the Belt, the race attracted nearly 500 Richmond residents who strolled, jogged, and raced the 3.1 mile route through Rocketts Landing and the surrounding neighborhood. Rain showers persisted throughout the morning, but participants still crossed the finish line with smiles on their faces. Live music, vendors, and a visit from Nutzy the Squirrel added to the festivities. All in all, the event was successful in raising over $40,000 to support colon cancer research, preventative care, and advocacy.
Rocketts Red Glare - May 26, 2013

For the second year, Rocketts Landing brought the Richmond community together for an evening of music, food, fireworks, and celebration in honor of Memorial Day. Approximately 6500 were in attendance for the event which benefitted local non-profit Connor's Heroes. A kid's fun zone featured hula hoops, frisbees, and sidewalk sketching and RVA Street Foodies provided food. The good times rolled as Mike Banks, Chris Norred, and Kings of Swings performed and Richmonders danced in the sand. As the sun set, revelers oohed and ahhhed to the sounds and sights of fireworks bursting above the skyline and reflecting on the James.
Cap2Cap Bike Ride - May 11, 2013

2500 cyclists rolled into Rocketts Landing for the 5th annual Cap2Cap Bike Ride. Participants rode 25-, 50-, or 100-mile courses on a sunny spring morning to raise awareness and funds for the Virginia Capital Trail. The trail, once completed, will total 55 miles, spanning the distance from Richmond to Williamsburg. Not only did the riders get a great workout, they also enjoyed a finish line celebration complete with live bands, BBQ, and a bustling sponsor expo. As a special treat this year, Hardywood Park shared their Virginia Capital Ale Trail Ale, the first brew they have offered in cans.
VCU Collegiate Regatta - March 30, 2013

Students from Virginia Commonweath, University of Richmond, James Madison, Old Dominion, Christopher Newport, William & Mary, and George Mason all took to the banks and the waters of our James River on a sunny spring morning to kick off the Rocketts Landing 2013 summer event season. Early races featured novice teams and the afternoon brought the veterans in some hotly contested races. The grill was fired up all day as parents, friends, alumni, and fans enjoyed burgers and BBQ while cheering on their team and taking in views of the Richmond city skyline against a bright blue sky.
Run to the River - October 20, 2012

Richmond runners faced the 'Beast of the East End' in the Rocketts Landing Run to the River to benefit the Neighborhood Resource Center of Greater Fulton. Dubbed Richmond's toughest 10K urban cross-country run, the course took participants up hills, over cobblestones, along the James, and through Rocketts Landing. The morning also featured a 5K walk, giving neighborhood youngsters a chance to join in on the fun. As always, runners and walkers alike were treated to a finish-line party with music, prizes, chair massages, and delicious homemade goodies baked in the NRC kitchen.
Dragon Boat Festival - October 6, 2012

The dragons were back at Rocketts Landing for the 3rd annual International Dragon Boat Festival presented by SportsBackers and Great White North. Seventeen teams competed this year, with the majority hailing from Richmond. Rocketts Landing residents showed their spirit by fielding a paddling team and many more neighbors could be seen cheering and basking in October's bright blue weather. Once again, the local Chinese American community treated competitors and spectators to traditional music and dance. Congrats to our local champions, BB&T Capital Markets!
Richmond Rox Triathlon - September 23, 2012

1.2 mile swim. 56 mile bike. 13.1 mile run. Richmond Rox endurance triathlon, organized by Richmond MultiSports,will go down in history as the first ever half iron in Richmond and Rocketts Landing played the proud host. Over three hundred athletes competed and two hundred volunteers came out to support them. The crowds gathered along the riverbank in the early morning hours to cheer on the swimmers and they stuck around into the mid-afternoon to celebrate with the finishers amidst live music and food provided by M Bistro and Wine Bar.
Massey on the River - September 22, 2012

Large, white party tents, and little, white lights brought an air of celebration to Rocketts Landing on Saturday. 750 kind-hearted Richmonders ate, drank, danced, and schmoozed the night away all in an effort to raise funds for the VCU Massey Cancer Center. The evening featured food by Ukrops and drinks from Heavy Seas and Ingelside Vineyards. Partygoers played cornhole and danced to the music of Three Sheets to the Wind. A silent auction which included getaways, leisure activities, and gift cards to some of our favorite Richmond restaurants raised additional funds in the fight against cancer.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Duck Race - August 11, 2012

Forecasts of rain did not deter nearly 4000 people from attending the Big Brothers Big Sisters Duck Race in its first year at Rocketts Landing. The day was filled with food and games and music and dance. Vender tents and bouncy castles lined the river bank. Even as the clouds broke just before the ducks dropped at 5pm, revelers stuck around to witness thousands of rubber ducks bob their way along the James River to the finish line. Everyone crossed their fingers, hoping to win the grand prize - a Nissan Sentra.
Rocketts Landing Triathlon - July 22, 2012

Over 400 athletes arrived pre-dawn on a cool, foggy Sunday to compete in Richmond MultiSports' 4th Annual Rocketts Landing Olympic distance Triathlon and Duathlon. The newly expanded marina at Rocketts allowed for a smoother, yet longer, transition from swim to bike and the finish line was moved from the river bank to Old Main St. Athletes and spectators alike were treated to a post-race celebration at The Boathouse where they took in views of the river, skyline, and finish line all while enjoying breakfast burritos, smoothies, and beer!
Sprints Regatta - June 23, 2012

Virginia Boat Club did it again this year, drawing teams from the surrounding states of North Carolina, Tennessee, Maryland, and DC, as well as a number of rowers from elsewhere in the Commonwealth, to compete in the 9th annual Sprints Regatta at Rocketts Landing. Blue skies and calm waters made for ideal conditions once again this year. Pop-up tents lined the riverbank and fans enjoyed good food and good music as they cheered their favorites on along the 1000 meter course.

Thousands gathered by the river to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday. Local musical favorites, Colin Healy and Kings of Swing, played while Richmonders swayed to the beat on a sandy dance floor. Others enjoyed picnics, ice cream, beer, and wine on the banks of the James. Replicas of Columbus' Nina and Pinta docked at Rocketts Landing days before the celebration and their decks filled with visitors throughout the evening. As darkness set in, fireworks sparkled over the river with a beautiful city skyline backdrop to finish off Memorial Day with a bang!
